Semaglutide vs Tirzepatide

A patient-friendly comparison of two major metabolic therapy pathways and the factors that shape physician selection.

This article is educational and is not medical advice. A licensed clinician must review your medical history before determining whether treatment is appropriate.

The mechanism difference

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptor pathways.

That difference does not automatically make one medication right for every patient. Medical history, tolerability, access, dosing goals, and clinician judgment are still central.

What the physician compares

A physician may compare prior medication response, baseline nausea or reflux, diabetes risk, weight trajectory, lab history, and whether a patient is starting fresh or continuing care.

The review also considers what would make treatment inappropriate or require additional monitoring.

The goal is fit

The right choice is the one that fits the patient safely and can be followed over time.
